COMPANIES that provide childcare services for workers will be able to retain their employees and this will help Penang achieve gender equality, says state social development and non-Islamic religious affairs committee chairman Chong Eng.
“So many mothers are forced to leave the workforce due to the lack of affordable childcare.
“A proper infrastructure where children can be nurtured, will give parents peace of mind while working,” she said at a press conference after presenting a childcare centre grant to Micron Memory Malaysia Sdn Bhd at Whytehouse Batu Kawan.
Micron opened its first industry-driven childcare centre there in November 2022. It is operated by Whytehouse Education Group.
Chong lauded Micron Memory for being the first multinational company in Penang to establish a childcare centre at its workplace.
This was made possible through a partnership with TalentCorp, Penang Women’s Development Corporation (PWDC) and the state government.
Chong said the centre was a reflection of Penang and Malaysia’s aspirations for inclusive economic growth.
“We hope this one-off grant will encourage Micron not only in boosting the well-being of their workers but also in helping Penang achieve its vision to be a robust investment and talent hub,” she said.
She added that the state was ready to help more companies set up childcare centres. — By K. KASTURI DEWI
