MORE than 15,000 people flocked to the two-day Malaysian International Travel Mart (MITM) 2023 held at the Setia SPICE Arena in Relau, Penang.

Organised by the Malaysian Chinese Tourist Association (MCTA) the travel mart featured 37 exhibitors who set up 220 booths.

An estimated RM45mil worth of tour packages were snapped up by visitors.

The event was launched by caretaker Penang tourism and creative economy committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, organising chairman Edwin Tan, MCTA national president Paul Paw, MCTA life honorary president Datuk Albert Tan Sam Soon and MCTA (Penang branch) committee members.

Yeoh said in his speech that the travel mart showcased enticing promotions tailored for discerning travelers.

“One of the primary objectives of this fair is to promote Malaysia as a premier tourist destination for both local and international visitors.

“Penang has consistently encouraged investments in infrastructure and tourism.

“We aspire to become a major player in tourism and economic growth, enhancing Malaysia’s reputation as a diverse and multi-faceted country.”

Yeoh added that the MITM Travel Mart presented a unique opportunity to cross-sell and re-market domestic tourism products on both local and international platforms.

“As tourism steadily recovers, it is crucial for all stakeholders and industry players to collaborate in creating seamless and unforgettable experiences.

“Throughout the years, we have diversified our tourism products by leveraging local resources while preserving the state’s cultural and natural treasures.

“The Penang government has ventured into medical tourism, education tourism, creative industries, and the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) sector.”

Yeoh said the future of the tourism sector in Penang and Malaysia looked promising.

“The Penang government firmly believes that tourism not offers new economic opportunities but also fosters unity among our citizens.

“I hope this travel fair will not only generate good business and bookings but also contribute to the sustainable economic growth of Malaysia.

“I am confident that this growth will position Penang as one of the most sought-after tourist destinations in the region,” he added.

Among the exhibitors was Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) which set up an exciting and colourful booth offering deals to destinations such as Haadyai, Songkhla, Phuket, and Krabi.

Also present at the opening of the travel mart were Penang Global Tourism senior manager Pauline Yoon, Malaysia Airlines area manager (northern region commercial – sales) Lisa Wong Wen Ling, RW Shipping senior manager (sales) Lacey Sim and TAT marketing officer Jackson Paul Xavier.
