PARTI Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has named mathematics professor Dr Darren Ong Chung Lee as its candidate for Dengkil in the upcoming Selangor election.

The 36-year-old environmental activist has lived in Dengkil since 2016 and has been PSM chairman there since last year.

Born in Sarawak, Ong said he had volunteered with PSM since 2013 and joined as a member in 2018.

“My family moved to Selangor in 1998 and I (was a PSM volunteer) in Kota Damansara, where I lived then.

“I like PSM’s principles especially in its fight for the rights of the poor.

“I promise to be the voice for the locals in Dengkil, especially to bring up issues such as overcrowded health clinics, lack of infrastructure, floods and settlers’ land matters, among others,” he told a press conference at the Dengkil PSM branch office on Friday (July 14).

PSM chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj had made the announcement of Ong's candidacy earlier.

After the announcement, Ong took an oath to not play the race card to win votes and declared his assets valued at RM850,000 as of June.
