PENGURUSAN Air Selangor Sdn Bhd has launched its non-revenue water (NRW) reduction becoming mainstream campaign which aims to invite public participation in efforts to reduce NRW.

The campaign is an important step in addressing the challenges water service operators face in managing NRW holistically and focuses on engaging all parties across the spectrum.

Previously, water service providers along with regulatory body National Water Services Commission (SPAN) were the main stakeholders involved in these efforts.

By launching this campaign, on a broader scale, Air Selangor aims to ensure that NRW reduction initiatives can be effectively implemented and make a greater impact.

This is in line with its long-term goal of reducing NRW levels to 25% by 2025 and 23% by 2030.

The campaign has two new initiatives, namely the Air Selangor leak reporting campaign and the use of body cameras by Air Selangor enforcement officers.

Through this campaign, the public is encouraged to promptly report any leaks, whether pipes or meters, using a new feature in the Air Selangor app.

By actively involving users, Air Selangor is able to identify and rectify leaks quicker, reduce unnecessary water loss and preserve resources.

Additionally, with body cameras, illicit activities involving the unauthorised use of treated water can be monitored and solid evidence can be gathered for the purpose of pursuing civil claims for water loss compensation.

Air Selangor acting chief executive officer Abas Abdullah said: “Current statistics indicate that only 40% of the total number of leaks discovered are reported by the public, compared to countries like Australia and the United Kingdom, which have much higher statistics with 90% of leaks being reported by the public.

“Therefore, through the campaign, we hope to encourage the public to promptly report leak incidents, which will help reduce NRW levels more effectively.”

SPAN chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Faizal Abdul Rahman, who was also at the launch, said a collective effort from all parties would achieve the goal.

“The launch of the campaign marks a significant turning point in our journey towards more efficient and sustainable water management.

“I believe that only through collective efforts and commitment from all parties, including water service providers and consumers, we can achieve success in addressing the NRW challenges in our country.”

He added his support for Air Selangor in its efforts to actively involve consumers and the public in the campaign.

He hoped other water service providers in the country would adopt similar campaigns to emphasise the importance of NRW reduction among consumers.
