Recognition for Penangites

PENANG will always have a special place in Star Media Group adviser Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai’s heart despite having moved away from the state some 30 years ago.

He said Penang remained close to his heart and he would still make it a point to return to the island once a month without fail.

“I have been lucky in my journalism career to have received awards both nationally and internationally, but this is the first time I have received an award from a Penang organisation,” said Wong.

“It is indeed a privilege and honour to receive an award from Penang.

“Although I have lived in Selangor for more than 30 years, as a Penangite, I come back to the island every month without fail.

“This recognition is important. I started my career in Penang many years ago.

“Penang has given me plenty of opportunities. I am dedicating this award to my wife, who is also a Penangite, and to my colleagues at The Star in Penang.

“This is where The Star was born and this is where its roots are,” he said at the 6th INPenang International Awards 2023 in George Town.

Wong was speaking after receiving the INPenang International Outstanding Achievers Award (Malaysia) for his accomplishments, contributions and being one of the key players in putting Penang on the world map.

He was joined by three other winners in the category at the event.

The biennial international awards ceremony paid homage to 17 exceptional individuals and organisations, all hailing from Penang, for their remarkable achievements, outstanding contributions to society and steadfast commitment to excellence in their respective fields.

This year saw the introduction of a new category – the INPenang Inspiration Award 2023 that went to Zy Lee Kher.

The 16-year-old is a Paralympic swimmer whose remarkable journey embodies resilience and compassion, serving as an inspiration to all to conquer adversities and embrace their own potential.

The individuals and organisations celebrated and honoured during the awards ceremony were each presented with a specially designed certificate and handcrafted pewter trophy.

Penang Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and caretaker Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow presented the awards to the recipients, together with CHTNetwork founding president Datuk Chng Huck Theng.

Chng shared in his speech that when he established the awards more than 15 years ago, many told him that it would be difficult to gain support from Penangites for the event.

“Many said it was bound to fail, but this year marks the sixth edition of the event.

“It is a unique awards ceremony that is held every two years, and only recognises individuals who were born in or have contributed to Penang and served its society.

“The INPenang International Awards is no longer just a local event but an international awards ceremony that draws people from all over to be part of this successful journey,” he said.

Chng said this year the ceremony recognised amazing individuals and organisations in four award categories.

“This awards ceremony has always been about quality and not quantity. For individuals, we look for those who are hardworking, successful, smart and have a good heart.

“The basic checklist for organisations is that they have created a reputable brand name within their respective industries and are contributing to society.

“This time we have introduced a new category, the INPenang Inspiration Award as well,” said Chng.

Chow said in his speech that Penang was a vibrant melting pot of diverse cultures and ideas.

“The honorees tonight reflect the unwavering commitment of those who are leaving an indelible mark on the global stage.

“Their accomplishments resonate far beyond our borders.

“Let us take this moment to celebrate their international acclaim and draw inspiration from their success to propel us all towards greater heights,” he said.

The event was organised by CHTNetwork, established in 2008 to create a dynamic platform for businesses to grow, ideas to be generated and people in the know to be connected.
