PETALING Jaya City Council (MBPJ) will be building new hawker stalls in Damai Setia People’s Park in Damansara Damai, in an effort to relocate the unlicensed hawkers in the vicinity.

The project will also see new recreational amenities added to the park, better known as Urban Park 1.

It is located along Jalan PJU10/1, Petaling Jaya.

MBPJ’s Corporate Communi-cations Unit said in a media statement that residents had complained about unlicensed hawkers causing problems such as improper rubbish disposal and obstruction of public roads.

“After numerous discussions and enforcement efforts, MBPJ decided to plan the project to prevent these problems.”

The project located on a 0.58ha site will feature more than 40 stalls and have toilets as well as 36 parking bays.

Urban Park 1 will also have a surau, guard post, three huts and the rainwater harvesting system.

“Recreational components will be added to address the daily social needs of the local community.

“In line with the goals of the Petaling Jaya Sustainable Strategic Plan 2030, the project aims to optimise green elements and improve liveability,” said MBPJ.

At the groundbreaking ceremony for the project were Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir, MBPJ Landscape Department director Dr Badrulzaman Jaafar and incumbent Bukit Lanjan assemblyman Elizabeth Wong.
