Hulu Kelang candidate to look into uncompleted roadworks

JUWAIRIYA Zulkifli (pic) has pledged to resolve the long-standing problem of an uncompleted sewerage project in Taman Keramat if she wins the Hulu Kelang seat in the Aug 12 state polls.

The Pakatan Harapan candidate is also proposing that a townhall session be organised for residents to give feedback and receive updates about the project.

“I have received numerous complaints from locals about the issue, which has been ongoing for the past eight years.

“Many roads have suffered damage. Locals have also complained about shoddy resurfacing works in the area,” she said.

The project in question involves the replacement of underground sewer pipes, which stretch from AU2 to AU4 in Taman Keramat.

It has caused potholes while many roads in Taman Keramat were also closed to motorists to facilitate construction works.

Juwairiya said the project was being undertaken by the Sewerage Services Department under the Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Ministry.

“The ministry is headed by Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, a fellow PKR member. I am confident we can work out a solution,” she added.

On Aug 22 last year, StarMetro reported that the project received three extensions due to funding problems and frequent change of subcontractors.

Juwairiya, the incumbent Bukit Melawati assemblyman, was speaking during a press briefing at the Pakatan operation centre in Taman Melawati.

The 38-year-old is facing Perikatan Nasional’s Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, a former Selangor Mentri Besar for the Hulu Kelang seat.

Juwairiya admitted she faced an uphill task, but expressed confidence that her campaign strategy would be effective.

“I have decided to meet voters face to face via community programmes, rather than traditional political ceramah (speeches).

“Often times, ceramah events draw only party supporters and might not attract a wider audience,” she said.

Juwairiya said her focus would be on women and youths, who make up more than 48% of voters in Hulu Kelang.

Asked if she would be made a state executive council member should Pakatan retain Selangor, the political secretary to caretaker Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said this was up to the leadership.
