HOUSEbuyers in Sarawak have been advised to lodge a complaint with the state Housing Purchaser’s Claims Tribunal within 18 months if they find defects in their new homes.

“There are still many housebuyers who are unaware of their rights when it comes to property defects,” said Sarawak Deputy Public Health, Housing and Local Government Minister Michael Tiang.

He said owners who found property defects should exercise their right and file a complaint with the housing tribunal within 18 months from the time the property was purchased.

“Some are being persuaded not to seek help during that period, nor are they seeking legal advice,” he told reporters after launching a Seberkas youth fitness programme in Sibu, Sarawak.

Tiang said complaints could now be lodged online and the Housing Purchaser’s Claims Tribunal would be accessible in major areas such as Sibu, Miri, Bintulu and Limbang.

This, he said, would make it easier for housebuyers to address their issues as they did not have to travel to Kuching to initiate claims.

He added that the warranty period for houses and the tribunal’s jurisdiction expired after the 18-month timeframe.

“Of course, housebuyers can complain to the developer and make a claim, but if your grievances are not being addressed properly, lodge a report at the nearest housing tribunal quickly,” said Tiang.
