State polls: Kuang’s public health clinic in dire condition

THE public health clinic in Pekan Kuang built in the 1960s is hardly sufficient to cater to the town’s present population of 100,000.

Despite its dilapidated facilities, the clinic sees about 80 patients in a day, according to a small group of police veterans.

They highlighted this to Pakatan Harapan candidate Datuk Hasnal Rezua Merican, 53, from Barisan Nasional, at his war room.

They said the clinic urgently needed an upgrade and that there was a need for more Muslim burial grounds.

The veterans also want the flood issue to be addressed.

Hasnal attributed the flooding to poor drainage system.

“This is a village and people just dug their own drainage systems,” he said.

“Kuang’s landscape is undulating. With the poor drainage system, rain water stagnates in some areas, causing floods.”

Hasnal said that if he won the seat, he would hold a convention and invite village heads, joint management bodies, residents associations and non-governmental community in Kuang to attend.

“At the convention, we will educate leaders on ways to apply for welfare aid. People here are unaware about how to even apply for zakat funds.

“I had a case of a young adult who had lost a leg due to diabetes.

“He was living with friends and couldn’t access welfare assistance because he could not afford to have his photo taken for the application.

“These are unnecessary requirements.

“The Welfare Department should also go to the houses of people in need, especially the disabled or those who just cannot travel to the office.

“Their rights to apply for welfare aid cannot be denied just because they do not have a passport-sized photo with a blue background.

“If I am chosen, I will champion welfare awareness,” said Hasnal.

The Kuang seat will see a three-cornered fight between Hasnal, Mohd Rafiq Abdullah, 48, from Perikatan Nasional and Independent candidate Salleh Amiruddin, 60.
