DISABLED voters should be prioritised and given more accessible facilities when they vote, says Pakatan Harapan candidate Mohd Amran Sakir.
He had just visited the SK Gesir Tengah voting centre in Hulu Bernam at noon on Saturday (Aug 12).
Mohd Amran, 59, who voted at SK Kalumpang at 8am earlier in the day, visited all the polling areas in Hulu Bernam to see the conditions and their accessibility.
During his visit to SK Gesir Tengah, he was greeted by 39-year-old Mohd Shahril Ramli, a person with disabilities from Kuala Kubu Baru, who wanted the Election Commission to give priority to the disabled and elderly, especially in Hulu Selangor district.
"It is difficult for some disabled people just to get out of bed and come to the polling centre.
"(The EC should) make it easier for us to cast our votes," he said.
Mohd Shahril, who is the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council solid waste management and public cleaning director, said it had been difficult to adjust after he was struck with gout last year and became wheelchair-bound.
"Especially here, the slope is very steep, making it difficult to vote here with a lot of assistance needed.
"From the time I Leave my home in Kuala Kubu Baru MDHS quarters until I reach home, I have to depend on others for help.
"I was committed to cast my vote today. I was unable to do it during the 15th General Election last year as I was bedridden," said Mohd Shahril.
Mohd Amran is in a straight fight against Perikatan Nasional's Mu’Izzuddeen Mayyuddin.
In the 14th General Election, Barisan Nasional’s Datuk Rosni Sohar (Umno) won the seat by a narrow margin.
He obtained 8,164 votes to Mohd Amran’s 8,144, while Muhamed Salleh Ri of PAS garnered 2,554 votes.
Meanwhile, Kuala Kubu Baru incumbent Lee Kee Hiong of Pakatan cast her vote at SMK Dato Kamaruddin at 10am.
She is in a four-cornered fight against Dr Siva Prakash Ramasamy (Muda), Chng Boon Lai (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and Henry Teoh Kien Hong (Perikatan).
