On the 10th anniversary celebration of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) in Sibu, the long anticipated chancellor’s hall finally became a reality.

“This hall is named Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud Chancellor’s Hall in recognition and commemoration of the head of state’s services and contributions since the beginning of the establishment of UTS.

“It is also a mark of respect for His Excellency as the first Chancellor of UTS until today,” said UTS vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Khairuddin Ab Hamid.

Speaking at the inauguration of the hall by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, he said the completion of the hall was a historic event for UTS.

The construction of the hall, which cost about RM150mil, started in September 2019 but was only completed in June this year.

“The chancellor’s hall has three separate main halls, each accommodating around 850 people, which can be opened up to become one grand hall, with a seating capacity of almost 2,800 people. For banquet purposes, it can accommodate about 2,000.

“There are also three seminar rooms, each with a seating capacity of 130 people.

“Spacious parking can accommodate 340 cars and 60 motorcycles, while a modern kitchen with facilities makes it ideal for official government and corporate events, conferences and weddings,” he said.

The building is also equipped with a high-quality acoustic system, digital water feature, elegant interior lighting and carpet design that used local art motifs.

“In conjunction with UTS’ 10th anniversary, this hall is a special gift to all campus residents, staff and students,” he said.
