Projects in seven areas to help Klang evolve into a city

Noraini: MPK is addressing people’s needs by designing environmentally and socially resilient areas.

KLANG Municipal Council (MPK) has allocated RM35mil to design and build greener and cleaner liveable spaces.

Council president Noraini Roslan said there was a need to design environmentally and socially resilient areas for the purpose of urban regeneration and placemaking.

“We need to improve the area by advancing the landscape.”

She said areas targeted for upgrading included north Klang town centre, Kapar, Meru, Port Klang, Tanjung Harapan, south Klang town centre and Bandar Bukit Raja.

“A sum of RM9.98mil has been allocated for north Klang town centre.

“Some of the projects will involve Pasar Jawa and alleys surrounding Jalan Pos Baru.

“In Meru, RM5mil has been allocated for upgrading of the recreational park, landscape plaza, buildings, food court and fruit stalls,” she added during a public participation session for Budget 2024 preparation at a hotel in Klang.

Noraini said RM1mil had been allocated for Kapar, RM5mil for Port Klang, RM2mil for Tanjung Harapan, RM5mil for south Klang and RM7mil for Bandar Bukit Raja).

“MPK’s rejuvenation project aims to breathe new life into various parts of Klang as it will soon attain city status,” she added.

Among those at the budget session were residents, stakeholders from the health and education sectors as well as developers.

In July, Local Government Development Minister Nga Kor Ming announced during a visit to Klang that it would become Malaysia’s 20th city.

Selangor will now have a fourth city in addition to Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam and Subang Jaya.

Klang, which is 133 years old, has a population of 500,000 people with MPK’s annual income above RM100mil derived from assessment collection and other sustainable sources.
