AFTER years of putting up with traffic congestion, Jalan Ulu Sungai Merah residents in Sibu, Sarawak, can soon heave a sigh of relief as part of the road will be turned into a dual carriageway.

Sarawak Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Michael Tiang said the tender for upgrading work on the road would be called soon.

The Pelawan assemblyman said the state-funded project should have started last year but was put on hold to allow for more funding for the shifting of existing utilities.

Two schools − a primary and one secondary − are also located along the road.

Tiang was speaking after taking part in a street lighting ceremony near the Taman Muhibbah food court.

The funds for the RM6,000 light decoration project came from his minor rural projects (MRP) allocation.

Also present was Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Clarence Ting.
