EDRA Melaka Power Plant (EMPP) is the recipient of the Power Magazine’s Top Plant Award – Gas Category at the publication’s annual Experience Power Conference.

The award recognises EMPP’s excellent management system recorded in 2022 through the deployment of advanced technology, maximising efficiency whilst minimising environmental impact.

In addition, the award is a testament to the prudent operations and maintenance (O&M) practices attributed to the O&M team who are committed to ensure the power plant runs sustainably, safely and economically.

Built, owned and operated by Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd’s (Edra) wholly-owned subsidiary, Edra Energy Sdn Bhd, the plant is the largest combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant in South-East Asia thus far, with a total installed capacity of 2,242MW.

The low-carbon power plant was fully commissioned on Feb 28, 2022 and consists of three generating blocks that featured the world’s most advanced and efficient 9HA.02 gas turbine technology.

“Edra is extremely happy to be bestowed with this prestigious international award in recognition of the technological excellence and outstanding performance of our power plant and its value chain,” said Edra deputy chief operating officer Anbarasan Sellappan.

“Our employees are our greatest assets. With strong project management approaches, they have taken huge steps ahead in completing the project with agile execution and with the highest quality standards, all of which were achieved within a crucial timeline despite the Covid-19 pandemic. Congratulations to all our employees on this amazing achievement,” he added.

In response to the Malaysian government’s recommendation to build, own and operate power plants in Peninsular Malaysia underpinned by a climate change mitigation commitment, EMPP is set to deliver secure and reliable electricity supply at economically competitive tariffs.

Specifically, EMPP is capable of generating about 19.6GW electricity annually, contributing about 10% of the total power demand in Peninsular Malaysia, equivalent to powering up to four million homes for 21 years at a high efficiency with a combustion capability at low nitrogen oxides (NOx) emission.

Prioritising ‘Safety First, Quality Foremost, Pursuing Excellence’ as its basic principle, the power plant has to-date achieved close to 15 million safe man-hours without any lost time injuries since its construction commenced in December 2017.

The power plant also represents a wealth of economic opportunities in the country, as it attracts domestic and international investments, boosting industrial and commercial developments and thus, further driving Malaysia’s economy to a higher level.

While enabling energy abundance, EMPP will continue to spur the socio-economic development particularly in Melaka through the provision of local employment as well as community empowerment in the field of education, sports and welfare.

Launched in 1882, Power Magazine is one of the oldest, continually published business-to-business magazines.

For over four decades, it has honoured the top performers in the electricity-generating industry with annual power plant awards.

Award winners are selected by the editors of Power based on nominations submitted by suppliers, designers, constructors, and operators of power plants.
