Extraordinary Jalur Gemilang replica

Parents, teachers and pupils with the 23m by 8.5m replica of the Malaysian flag made out of egg trays.

A KINDERGARTEN in Gelang Patah, Johor, has made it into the Malaysia Book of Records after making the largest replica of the Jalur Gemilang from painted egg trays.

Mega Genius kindergarten headmistress R. Mohanambal said 2,128 egg trays were used to make the 23m-long and 8.5m-wide replica of the Malaysian flag.

“It took us about three weeks to paint the eggs trays and about 10 hours to put them all together to create the giant flag.

“The egg trays were painted by our pupils during their arts-and-crafts session in class.

“We also have parents coming on Fridays and Saturdays to help paint the trays,” she said.

Mohanambal said 86 pupils, 105 parents as well as 13 teachers and staff were involved in creating the replica flag.

“I am very impressed with the dedication of our pupils and their parents.

“Some parents who are working in Singapore would drop by our kindergarten right after work to help paint the trays.

“The children were also very enthusiastic.

“Since they are all still very young, we didn’t want tire them too much but they would excitedly ask to have greater involvement in painting the egg trays.”

Mohanambal said the kindergarten did something special for National Day every year.

“Every year throughout the National Day month, we will have all kinds of activities, like simple history lessons, to cultivate the Merdeka spirit among our pupils.

“Last year, we made a replica of the Jalur Gemilang with coconut shells.”

She said they began joining the egg trays together on Aug 22 to form the Jalur Gemilang at Dewan Raya Gelang Patah.

“We started at 7pm and about an hour or two later we had the children sent home while parents and teachers continued putting the egg trays together until about 5am the next day,” she elaborated.

The kindergarten received a certificate from Malaysia Book of Records office manager Lee Pooi Leng at a ceremony that was also attended by Kemelah state assemblyman N. Saraswati.
