A ROAD upgrade and expansion project in Bukit Rahman Putra (BRP), Sungai Buloh in Selangor, will go ahead despite objections from the local community, says Selayang Municipal Council (MPS).

However, MPS president Datuk Mohd Yazid Sairi said a briefing session, expected to take place early next month, would be held with residents who were against the project.

“The project has to go ahead as it mitigates traffic congestion in the area.

“We are aware of the residents’ objections, but MPS must also take into account those who want the project to go ahead because of the traffic situation now,” he told StarMetro after the council’s monthly full board meeting at Menara MPS.

Mohd Yazid said the RM2.6mil project would be carried out and borne by the developer of a nearby residential development.

“If we do not do it now the traffic situation will only worsen and become unbearable within the next five years.

“At that point it would also cost MPS more to carry out the same expansion project,” he explained.

StarMetro had previously reported that some residents were against the project as it would take up 20% of the 3.25ha Padang Awam BRP.

According to a notice board posted at the park, the proposed project to widen the narrow service road was for nearby SMK Bukit Rahman Putra.

The project would also see the cutting down of shady trees around the perimeter of the park to make way for the road expansion.

Mohd Yazid said that for every tree removed, two trees would be planted at the park and surrounding area.

“About 48 trees will be cut but at least 96 trees of different species will be planted,” he said, adding that the project would start soon.

In an Aug 26 article titled “Residents upset with plan to remove trees from park”, Action Committee Against Destruction spokesman Lam Kin Tong said contractors had first shown up on Aug 21.

This led to an altercation on Aug 24 at the BRP public park between the contractors and residents as both sides refused to give in, resulting in a police report being lodged.

Paya Jaras assemblyman Datuk Dr Halim Tamuri, who visited the site the next day, said he would find a way to resolve the matter as quickly as possible.
