SOME RM150mil has been allocated for the upgrading and expansion of Pontian Hospital, says Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi.

“As mentioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the tabling of Budget 2023, Pontian Hospital is among the hospitals in the country that will be upgraded and expanded.

“An initial budget of RM500,000 has been channelled by the Federal Government for early works this year.

“We expect the actual construction work to start as early as next year,” he said.

Onn Hafiz was speaking after attending the state-level ‘Wave the Jalur Gemilang’ programme at Pontian Municipal Council.

Earlier in his speech, Onn Hafiz said that Pontian Hospital would soon be getting two new blocks with the capacity to fit 150 beds.

He said that the Pontian market was also expected to be upgraded starting next year.

“I have just visited the Pontian market and saw that the building is old and in a dire condition.

“With the assistance of Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, who is the Pontian MP and the Deputy Finance Minister, we will look into ways to upgrade the market,” he said.

Onn Hafiz also checked on the ongoing upgrading works on the Sungai Pontian bridge during his visit to the district.

In a statement on his Facebook page, he said that the project to upgrade the bridge cost about RM23mil.

“The people of Pontian have been waiting for a better bridge for a very long time as the existing one is old and narrow.

“The state government hopes that with cooperation of the Pontian Public Works Department, the project can be completed by next year,” he said.
