Upgrading facilities and cleanliness among council’s priorities for Klang’s city status

UPGRADING public parks, improving cleanliness, rebuilding broken drains and resolving floods in residential areas are key drivers for community transformation in Klang as it works towards achieving city status.

Klang Municipal Council (MPK) president Noraini Roslan said the council had ongoing plans to upgrade basic amenities and resolve flooding in flood-prone areas to improve people’s livelihoods and well-being.

“Our aim now is to address these issues as we transform into a city. We want to explore opportunities to provide good infrastructure and amenities for the people,” she said after chairing MPK’s full board meeting at its headquarters in Jalan Perbandaran, Klang.

Noraini added that the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, had advised that infrastructure upgrades for Klang’s city status “must improve the well-being of the rakyat”.

“Public parks need improvement. We need to have better amenities where people are given a good venue to enjoy the green landscape and breathe fresh air so they can become happier and healthier individuals,” she said.

“Dedicated parks are needed to provide children, adults and senior citizens a safe space to play, meet and socialise. We want to create safe gathering spaces for an entire neighbourhood, as this will encourage more people to spend their time at local parks.”

On the cleanliness issue, Noraini said Taman Sentosa was now a relatively litter-free area after the council undertook efforts and increased public engagement to keep the area clean.

“We used a combination of methods that included CCTV cameras, awareness talks and enforcement measures. These methods have also reduced the number of illegal dumpsites along roadsides,” she said.

She added that MPK would increase its collaboration with the community in areas such as recycling and public hygiene.

Meanwhile, Noraini said the council was set to address the issue of flooding in residential areas with a long-term solution.

“Most drainage networks are old and can no longer accommodate the ever-expanding townships and increasing population density.

“We have to rebuild the drains to accommodate a higher capacity of water surface runoff,” she said.

In conjunction with the 66th National Day, Noraini said the council was offering discounts of between RM15 to RM300 on various council traffic compounds until Sept 17.

“The discounts do not apply for offences related to misusing reserved and disabled parking bays and obstructing parking bays,” she said.

Payment can be done via Jompay, Smart Parking MPKlang app, iKiosk machines at MPK’s headquarters and ipay.mpklang.gov.my
