Good turnout for scrabble meet to choose national reps

THE FIRST scrabble championship organised by a shopping centre and Malaysia Scrabble Association (MSA) saw the highest turnout since the Covid-19 pandemic with 240 players.

They came from all across Malaysia and Singapore to compete in the 1st Pearl Point Shopping Mall Scrabble Championship.

The championship held from Aug 26 to 27 was divided into two tournaments.

Players under 18 participated in the National Youth Scrabble Championship 2023 to vie for spots to represent Malaysia in the World Youth Scrabble Championship 2023, happening this December in Thailand.

The Open Division was for the very best of masters, intermediates and beginners with cash prizes for winners.

Total cash prize of up to RM5,000 sponsored by Pearl Point Shopping Mall was up for grabs in the open group.

Medals and certificates were also given out, making it one of the most lucrative scrabble games in this region.

The matches were also live-streamed with running commentary by MSA commentators.

MSA president Andrew Chang Ching Wei said the association was encouraged by the overwhelming response.

“This is the first time Pearl Point has taken part in organising the National Scrabble Championship for the youth and open group.”

Pearl Point Shopping Mall & Pearl Shopping Gallery marketing head Carmen Lee said she hoped the mall would draw the involvement of the Jalan Kelang Lama community towards attaining its vision of being a family-oriented destination.

“We hope all participants enjoyed this event. We are looking forward to the next tournament that brings value,” she said.

The winner of the National Youth Scrabble Championship was Eirfan Razman. Second place went to Ahmad Aqmarul Harraz Azhan and in third place was Dresden Lim Zhan Le.

Fourth to 10th placings were Ariana Onyinyechukwu Daniel, Alexis Koh Qiaan, Aidan Nathaniel Ho Ern Yu, Lim Eu Jie, Aghalya Nageshvaran, Chuah Rui Heng and Vyasa Dheva Nithyanandan, respectively.
