MALAYSIA International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) in Kuala Lumpur has been crowned Asia’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre at the World Travel Awards 2023 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

With 52,000sqm of exhibition and convention space, Mitec is the largest multipurpose venue for meetings, conferences, exhibitions and lifestyle events in Malaysia.

Mitec chief executive officer Mala Dorasamy said it was an honour to win the award, and attributed the achievement to “the hard work and dedication of my team of Mitecians, the support of our board, stakeholders, clients and suppliers”.

In the statement, she said that despite the unpredictable business operations landscape of 2021, Mitec continued its unwavering commitment to business sustainability.

“This involved activities such as reskilling and upskilling our team members, operational innovation, driving digital transformation and optimising both our business model and revenue streams.”

Among events held at Mitec this year was the 52nd Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Fair in March that received over 180,000 visitors and generated more than RM300mil in sales.

It also hosted Absolut Festival x Festival Gaya Raya 2023 which generated RM12.76mil in sales and recorded more than 1.65 million visitors.

Meanwhile, Tokyo Auto Salon held the first Malaysian edition of its automobile extravaganza in June that attracted over 91,000 visitors.

Mitec, managed by Prisma Gallery Sdn Bhd, has won several awards this year including Malaysia’s Best Tourism Destination.

It also won four awards at HAPA Award Malaysia Series 2023-2024, namely Malaysia’s Best Tourism under the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) category, as well as HAPA Resilience Award 2023, Malaysia’s Best Hospitality & Tourism Personality for Positive Impact Leadership and HAPA Best 30 Chefs for Master of Banquet Chef of the Year.

Mala also won Masterclass Women CEO of the Year 2022 at the Global Leadership Awards.

Prisma Gallery board of directors chairman Tan Sri Abdul Rahman Mamat said Mitec’s ability to overcome challenges and, most importantly, the strong dedication and enthusiasm of its team, was the backbone of the centre.

“Mitec’s unwavering commitment to recognising and nurturing talent and competency among its employees pushed it to become Malaysia’s leading venue,” he added.

Mitec expressed its gratitude to World Travel Awards.
