Peak of mid-autumn bliss

THE Mid-Autumn Festival is a time when the sale of mooncakes is at its peak.

One of the ways this festival was traditionally celebrated in Chinese culture was by honouring the moon while feasting on mooncakes.

Retail stores strive to offer a wide variety of the traditional delicacy to suit every customer’s preference.

Aeon Co (M) Bhd this year offers 201 flavours, and as such has entered the Malaysia Book of Records for most mooncake varieties.

Representatives from Malaysia Book of Records presented the certificate to Aeon chief merchandise and marketing officer Low Ngai Yuen at IOI City Mall in Putrajaya.

The award comes at an opportune moment, as Aeon earlier announced its inaugural Aeon Members’ Choice Awards for mooncakes.

Low said the idea of having the awards came up as there were so many types of mooncakes in the market.

“There are more than 800 different types of mooncakes. How do you choose?

“We sent questionnaires earlier this month and expected about 1,000 responses but were delighted to receive 2,882 in a two-week period,” she said.

Low said Aeon also wanted to acknowledge the mooncake suppliers for their creativity and commitment to quality.

“The awards today is to honour their hard work.

“We want them to look at the art of mooncake creation and put in a lot more development and research, while also taking into account what the customers are saying.

“I am glad that we have Musang King and onde-onde, among other flavours,” she added.

With a range of mooncakes on sale, Low encouraged customers to try new varieties.

She said the announcement on the award winners would also help customers with their mooncake choice.

“It is the peak shopping period and it will be good for people to know what other customers are buying.

“Gifting (of mooncakes) is very big in our country, especially for parents.

“Perhaps the customers would want to consider a new variety.

“There are those that are less sweet or are vegan,” she said.

The winners in the five categories of Aeon Members’ Choice Awards for mooncakes are Baker’s Cottage and Oversea (for Most Preferred Mooncake Brand), Duria The Night of Brilliance Blackthorn Charcoal (Most Popular Mooncake), Casahana (Best Mooncake Design), Hernan Musang King Pandan Snowy Mooncake (Most Innovative Mooncake Flavour) and Hong Kong MX Mooncake (Best Mooncake Packaging).
