Welfare home Rumah KIDS is holding its first-ever charity carnival to raise funds for its home tuition programme.

The carnival is being run with co-organiser Summit USJ shopping centre, alongside Subang Jaya City Council’s (MBSJ) Zone Four Residents’ Representatives Council (MPP).

The event will take place at the concourse of Summit USJ on Sept 23 from 10am to 5pm and booklets of RM10 can be purchased from the website, https://rumahkids.com

About 30 stalls will be set up offering food and beverages and fun games, as well as items for sale including artworks created by children of Rumah KIDS.

Net proceeds will go towards the shelter’s home tuition programme, where full-time teachers are employed to help the children improve their grades.

Rumah KIDS chairman Panir Rajamany said education was fundamental to building a more secure future for the children.

“Many of these children come with a huge gap in their education, some have missed about three to four years of formal schooling because of the trauma they experienced.

“Under the guidance of ‘house’ parents, the children are introduced to a new family where they develop friendships with their ‘brothers and sisters’ in a loving environment.

“They find joy and security in a healthy routine of study, chores, play and rest at Rumah KIDS,” said Panir.

Rumah KIDS started to engage private tutors to support its children in late 2020.

From one teacher, the number has now increased to three.

This effort has borne fruit as the children have improved in their studies.

Rumah KIDS’ vision is to see every child graduate with a Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certificate.

In a media statement, Rumah KIDS said it was an uphill task to pay tuition fees on top of the home’s monthly expenditure.

Rumah KIDS has been operating as a shelter home for orphaned, abused, abandoned and neglected children since 1991.

More than 300 children have grown up there.

The word “KIDS” stands for “kanak-kanak ini disayangi” or “these children are loved and cared for”.

Presently it has 36 children aged three to 18 in four locations.

Rumah KIDS is a registered non-profit with the Registrar of Societies, Welfare Department, Klang Municipal Council and related agencies.
