Sibu Divisional Health Office is going hard on people smoking in public places such as at eateries.
It has issued a total of 358 compound notices amounting to RM89,500 from Jan 1 to Sept 17 this year.
The compounds were issued under Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 following inspections on 179 food premises.
A spokesperson from the health office said each compound notice carried a fine of RM250, failing which court action would be taken against offenders.
“Any individual found guilty can be fined up to RM10,000 or jailed up to two years.”
Premises owners who fail to comply with the regulation could also face action under Regulation 12(1)(a) and Regulation 12(1)(b).
“Under Regulation 12(1)(a), (owners can be) fined up to RM3,000 or jailed up to six months, whereas under Regulation 12(1)(b), (owners can be) fined up to RM5,000 or jailed for a year.”
The spokesperson said smoking could increase the risk of respiratory diseases, including asthma, bronchitis and lung inflammation, and carried a higher risk of lung cancer, heart diseases and stroke.
“If a restaurant is crowded with smokers, it is best to avoid it; you can go elsewhere.
“Those who are willing to quit smoking can visit clinics for the quit smoking programme,” the spokesperson added.
