Coffee chain campaign on protecting terrapins

Last year, The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Malaysia raised RM30,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia.

BEVERAGE chain The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Malaysia is collaborating with Turtle Conservation Society of Malaysia (TCS) to safeguard painted terrapins.

The Save Terry campaign, which is part of The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Malaysia’s Caring Cup programme, aims to raise awareness of the plight of the endangered painted terrapins.

Last year, the chain collaborated with award-winning Malaysian author Daryl Kho to host a public book-reading session of his bestselling children’s fantasy novel called Mist-Bound: How to Glue Back Grandpa.

The book was based on his personal journey with a loved one affected by dementia.

The collaboration raised RM30,000 for the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation Malaysia.

The funds were channelled towards dementia care training, with the goal of empowering individuals to deliver exceptional care for individuals grappling with dementia.

The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Malaysia marketing and innovation head Fiona Rodrigues said, “Through our Caring Cup programme, we rally around the issues that matter to our communities.”

This year, the brand is putting the spotlight on the lesser-known painted terrapin species.

“Through the Save Terry campaign, we invite Malaysians to support vital turtle conservation efforts.

“Let us leave behind a legacy of environmental stewardship for the future generations of Malaysia.”

The painted terrapin, a species native to the freshwater rivers of Malaysia, is facing extinction.

Due to habitat destruction, pollution and illegal poaching of eggs for consumption, the population of these terrapins has drastically declined over the years.

Malaysians can make a personal contribution by “adopting” a terrapin through TCS at any The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf Malaysia cafe or online via its dedicated microsite.

Customers can also show their support by purchasing exclusive “Terry-pins”, available at RM15 each.

With the purchase of four pins, patrons will automatically become terrapin adopters.

All proceeds from “Terry-pin” sales go directly to TCS for protecting and rehabilitating painted terrapin populations.

Exclusive Save Terry merchandise will be made available for purchase in stores and a portion of the sales will be directed to TCS.
