MALAYSIA and China will continue to work closely together to achieve sustained growth, says consul general of China in Penang Zhou Youbin.

During a reception for the People’s Republic of China’s 74th anniversary, Zhou said that 2023 marked the 10th anniversary of the establishment of a comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Malaysia.

He said over the past decade, the two countries had maintained frequent high-level interactions, continued to deepen political mutual trust, and achieved fruitful outcomes in practical cooperation.

“According to statistics, in the first seven months this year, the bilateral trade volume between China and Malaysia reached US$106.68bil (RM504.49bil),” he said at St Giles Wembley Hotel.

Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who was also present, said that throughout the years, the state had witnessed the phenomenal growth and development of China.

“Recently, a delegation from Penang had the privilege of participating in the China International Fair for Investment and Trade and the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the Xiamen-Penang Sister City relationship,” he said, adding that the delegation’s visit “has undeniably strengthened the bonds between Penang and Xiamen, fostering mutual benefits for both regions.

“We extend our sincere gratitude to our gracious Chinese hosts for the warm reception and hospitality we received during the enriching visit.”

Chow said that diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China dated back to 1974 and had flourished over the years.

“China has remained Malaysia’s top trade partner for 14 consecutive years, as highlighted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently.”

Chow said the high trade value between Malaysia and China underscored China’s position as an economic powerhouse on the global stage.

“Let us remember that the founding of a nation is not merely a historical event for its citizens but also a resounding testament to the power of determination and cooperation,” he said.

Also present at the reception were some 300 guests comprising leaders of the state, organisation and communities.

National anthems of both countries were also sung at the reception.
