Making a bold statement by reimagining saree


Meticulously crafted from batik, songket and silk, are creations inspired by the saree.

A FASHION showcase is promising to be a spectacular celebration of Malaysian textiles with creations inspired by the saree.

The Navarasa Heritage Fashion Showcase, organised by Bkay Nair Resources (BNR) is a three-day extravaganza spotlighting artistic expression, craftsmanship and cultural diversity.

Meticulously crafted from batik, songket and silk, the saree will represent the Malaysian identity while serving as a medium of artistic expression.

The event aims to preserve and promote Malaysia’s cultural heritage through a series of workshops and a fashion show.

The ‘Navarasa: Colours of Emotion Meet Fashion’ will be held during the grand finale on Oct 14 at Kompleks Kraf Kuala Lumpur.The ‘Navarasa: Colours of Emotion Meet Fashion’ will be held during the grand finale on Oct 14 at Kompleks Kraf Kuala Lumpur.

It seeks to empower local artisans, designers and weavers while educating the public and creating a platform for designers to showcase their creations while incorporating traditional textiles into modern fashion.

Its awards will recognise the following:

• Upcoming designer

• Most creative designer

• Senior designer with the best Malaysian heritage design

“This goes beyond fashion – it’s a celebration of our cultural heritage and a testament to our commitment to preserving and promoting traditional craftsmanship,” said Navarasa Heritage Fashion Showcase director Bkay Nair.

“Through this event, we aim to bring the uniqueness of our heritage to Unesco. The recognition bestowed by Unesco holds the potential to project our nation’s artistic and cultural treasures on a global stage.”

During the event’s workshops held recently, participants delved into the rich history and cultural significance of batik and songket.

Skilled artisans and experienced instructors guided participants through informative sessions where they learnt the intricate techniques involved in creating these iconic Malaysian textiles.

Participants also gained insights into the use of natural dyes and colours, promoting sustainability and eco-consciousness.

The workshops concluded with a creative showcase, allowing participants to exhibit their batik designs and innovative creations.

Culminating on Oct 14 is the grand finale at Kompleks Kraf Kuala Lumpur.

The fashion show called “Navarasa: Colours of Emotion Meet Fashion” will be a mesmerising journey through emotions evoked by colours.

It will feature 11 visionary designers, including both students and experienced designers, showcasing 77 looks, seamlessly blending traditional fabrics like batik, songket and Malaysian silk with contemporary design aesthetics.
