SOME Klang Valley folk facing water shortage are resorting to alternative sources on the second day of a scheduled supply disruption.
The water disruption is due to maintenance and replacement works at Sungai Langat Water Treatment Plant (WTP) by Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor).
Residents in Ampang Jaya and Kampung Pandan said they bought bottled water while others were seen filling up containers at Air Selangor static tanks as well as public water taps.
Desa Pandan resident Nur Hidayah Hashim, 24, said although her family had stored water prior to the disruption, it ran out quickly.
She said her family of six could not store much water because they lived in an apartment.
“I tried getting water from a nearby mosque but the taps were dry over there too.
“Luckily, Air Selangor readied static tanks which are nearby,” she said when met at one such facility at Dataran Pandan Prima in Ampang Jaya, Selangor.
Similarly, Kampung Pandan resident Shahlan Shahman “recruited” his two sons to fill water containers at the static tanks as their stored water had depleted.
“I filled up a 200-litre container to face the disruption and thought it would be enough.
“But it was not enough for two days because we have an infant and the baby’s things need washing so a lot of water was used up,” the 41-year-old said.
Meanwhile, a plant nursery in Ampang Jaya is managing well as it had installed a rain harvesting system.
A worker who only wanted to be known as Umesh said rainwater was collected in several large containers.
“At the moment, we have enough for about four days to water the plants.
“It has also been raining in the area so the containers are being filled up continuously.”
A restaurant operator in Pandan Jaya who only wanted to be known as Alice said it was business as usual.
“We have been making trips to our house nearby in Pandan Perdana to fill up containers with water.
“It is a hassle but we have no choice if we want to remain open,” she said.
Several self-service laundry shops nearby have opted to limit services offered.
There were notices stating that only drying services for clothes were available for now.
Residential and commercial areas in three regions, namely the Petaling and Hulu Langat districts in Selangor, as well as most parts of Kuala Lumpur, are affected by the cut.
Water supply is expected to fully recover by noon today, according to Air Selangor.
In an update early Wednesday, the company said the asset upgrading, maintenance and replacement works in Sungai Langat WTP had been completed.
However, there was a minor technical difficulty on site, and Air Selangor was working to solve it.
Clean and safe treated water supply is being distributed through alternative sources to consumers in stages.
It added that the duration of supply recovery in affected areas depended on the location and distance of consumers’ homes.
The concessionaire also said water supply to seven regions in Selangor was being restored and was expected to be fully restored by midnight Thursday, following an odour pollution incident in Sungai Selangor.
