SAUJANA Golf and Country Club is the only Malaysian tract to get a mention in Golf Magazine’s first-ever Top 100 ranking of the best golf courses in Asia-Pacific.
The inaugural list published this year has Saujana, long established as one of Malaysia’s premier golf clubs, in 86th of the 100 courses.
The top pick was Australia’s Royal Melbourne (West Course), an Alister MacKenzie design from 1926.
In second place was Kingston Heath, also of Australia. It’s a layout crafted by Dan Soutar in 1925 and MacKenzie in 1926.
New Zealand’s Tara Iti Golf Club was third – a Tom Doak design of 2015.
In the article, the American publication said its “inaugural ranking of the finest courses in Asia-Pacific was long overdue.
“Not only does the region boast an eclectic mix of architecture, it is also home to some of the finest designs built this century.
“To say the course-building business in the lands where the sun rises first is booming, would be an understatement.”
Also from Asean region were Vietnam, with eight mentions, and Thailand with six.
Nepal, Singapore, Indonesia and Myanmar each got one listing alongside Saujana’s celebrated Palm course, often referred to in the golf industry as the Cobra course.
Commenting on their feather in the cap, Saujana general manager SA Nathan said it was honoured and proud to be among Asia’s elite golf clubs.
“As can be seen by the list, it features golf courses recognised around the globe, so for us to be among them – on the same list – it is indeed an honour and something we are immensely proud of.
“It has always been our policy to ensure the best playing conditions and amenities for our members,” he added.
