WITH the year-end monsoon fast approaching, some Klang Valley folk decided to learn skills they can use in case of an emergency.
About 200 people joined a public flood survival programme organised by non- profit organisation Malaysia International Search and Rescue (Misar) at its academy in Jalan Kampung Pandan, Kuala Lumpur.
The free event was aimed at beefing up emergency preparedness in the event of floods.
During the one-day course, participants learned how to prepare makeshift flotation devices, handle babies and persons with disabilities, escape from a flooded car, climb a rope down from a roof and stay afloat in floodwaters, as well as pet survival.
They also learned how to tie different types of knots including clove hitch, overhead knot, reef knot and cow hitch.
Participants were required to jump into a pool and climb around obstacles to recreate real-life flood situations.
The course was conducted by Misar founder and chairman K. Balasupramaniam, who is also an emergency survival trainer.
