Japanese band conductor leads as school raises RM66,000

Guest conductor Keiichi Kurokawa (in blazer) specially flew in from Japan to perform with SMK St Michael Ipoh's military band during the "Harmonies in Motion" fundraising concert on Sept 23 and 24.

SMK St Michael Ipoh’s military band raised about RM66,000 from their “Harmonies in Motion” concert.

Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd was the biggest contributor to the two-day fundraising concert, sponsoring RM20,000 for the school band.

The funds were meant to upgrade facilities in the school band’s room and to get new musical instruments for members.

About 600 people attended the performances, which were held at the school.

The audience was presented with 13 songs during each of the 90-minute shows.

They included classic pieces such as The Moon Represents My Heart and Rasa Sayang as well as songs from animated film Moana and popular band Coldplay.

The fundraiser also saw renowned band conductor Keiichi Kurokawa and saxophonist Hana Karasudani, who specially flew in from Japan, taking part in the performances.

School principal Phoon Kean Loon said the performances showed a spirit of unity, understanding and mutual respect.

“The concerts ended with a medley of Chinese, Indian and Malay tunes entitled ‘Unity In Diversity’, which reflect the essence of St Michael’s where students of diverse backgrounds learn and grow together.

“Their performance brought such touching enjoyment to the audience, demonstrating exquisite and harmonious music,” he said.
