Seeing red over inflated prices at evening market

Liew says he was charged RM18 for this packet of fried mee hoon with a piece of chicken, peanuts and anchovies at an evening market in Tebrau.

A BUSINESSMAN from Johor Baru claimed he paid RM33 for a pack of rice and mee hoon at an evening market in Tebrau.

The man, who only wanted to be known as Liew, said he was charged RM15 for a packet of white rice with a piece of chicken and two eggs.

He paid RM18 for a packet of fried mee hoon with a piece of chicken and some peanuts and anchovies.

“After leaving the stall I felt that the prices did not make sense so I went back and asked the stall owner to break it down.

“He told me that the white rice was RM3, chicken RM5 to RM6 depending on the size and egg was priced at RM3 each.

“After calculating, the stall owner told me that the packet of rice should actually cost RM11, which meant that the mee hoon was RM22 which was illogical.

“I felt that the stall’s worker had overcharged me and the stall operator showed inconsistency in his pricing.”

Liew had highlighted the matter on social media and was contacted by StarMetro for more details.

When he told the owner that his worker had overcharged him, Lew was offered a refund but he declined and also refused to take the food.

“I know that everybody needs to make a living but do not go overboard,” he said.

Lew added that such evening markets had been gaining popularity in Johor Baru but the food and beverages sold there were expensive.
