LOCAL authorities need to ensure road signboards are clearly visible to motorists at all times.
Social activist and safety advocate Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said he had noticed many instances where road signboards were partially obscured by foliage, which made it difficult for road users to read them.
He said although motorists widely used navigation apps, authorities still needed to maintain road signboards for the benefit of those who did not have access to such software.
“Road signboards are especially useful for senior citizens who may not be able to use their phones to navigate while driving.
“Motorists who are not familiar with the area will also be able to refer to them.
“Therefore, local authorities must maintain road signboards at all times,” he reiterated.
Lee cited as example a road signboard along Jalan Pandan Satu in Pandan Jaya, Selangor, which had been partially covered by tree branches for over two years.
He said it was a common problem in many areas.
“I have written a letter to Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) on the matter and am waiting for the foliage to be cleared,” he added. — By VIJENTHI NAIR
