CONVERSATIONS, good food and a live band were part of the Royal Klang Club’s (RKC) annual dinner themed “Sports Night”.
RKC president Kenny Lee Choo Hock said it was a snapshot of time, a moment of celebration that saw families and their children enjoying a wonderful evening.
“Dinner parties on a weekend are a fun way to get together with people we care about,” said Lee, 70, who was voted in three months ago.
Lee told StarMetro that RKC intended to create a culture of sports excellence with the aim to implement player development models while providing better sporting club facilities.
“Our committees are in discussion to come up with ideas to impact members’ children to become a formidable team for Selangor and the nation,” said the former banker.
RKC’s Sports Night saw about 300 people fill up The Lagoon Restaurant at the club.
There, master of ceremonies Zulkifli Abbas, a former Malaysian field hockey player who competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and K. Thavanesan, who represented Selangor in the National Colts under 20 hockey tournament in 1978 and 1979, kept the crowd entertained with their brand of wit.
Thavanesan said, “RKC had given birth to many sportsmen and sportswomen.
“I just feel there is nothing like an exciting dinner gathering with old friends, great conversations, live band and laughter, making it one of life’s simpler pleasures.”
Hockey legend Datuk Seri N. Shanmuganathan, 76, who played in three Olympics and three World Cups for Malaysia, said if RKC required his assistance in the sporting field, he would contribute.
“Because of my age, I will not be able to hold commitment on the field. I have to be realistic.
“But I can give advice on the system of play as we need to innovate in ways to win a game.”
RKC vice-president Serjeet Singh, a former Class 1 Federation International Hockey umpire in the European Cup in Hanover, Germany and Asian Games in the 1980s, said the club’s tennis courts, gym and board games room were being upgraded.
“The tennis courts are being upgraded to meet the future development of the sport that follows international standards.”
At the event, squash junior athletes, brothers Jayden and Julius Tan, aged 13 and 12, respectively, and Olivia Tan, nine, were recognised for their achievements at state-level competitions.
Among the guests were South Klang OCPD Asst Comm Cha Hoong Fong, North Klang OCPD Asst Comm S. Vijaya Rao, retired Court of Appeal judge Datuk George Varghese, Selangor Coast Club president KC Goh and Royal Selangor Yacht Club commodore Che Wan Mohamed Azuar.
