Privatisation of Penang market complexes answer to business revival


Tan says private companies must be registered with SSM to be eligible to apply.

SIX market complexes and hawker sites on Penang island will be privatised for three years to revive business activities there.

The premises are the Desa Green temporary hawker site, Desa Genting Complex, Lintang Minden 2 hawker site, Lot 10126 Jalan Paya Terubong hawker site (next to Polytechnic Bistari Relau), Sri Wangsa Lorong Perak hawker site and the Datuk Keramat market.

State publisher Buletin Mutiara reported that the privatisation would be carried out by Penang Island City Council (MBPP).

City councillor Tan Soo Siang said tender for the privatisation process opened on Nov 14, with a briefing session and a site visit held on Monday.

“The applicants must be companies registered in Penang island with the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM) and be eligible to participate in the tender process,” Tan said in a press conference.

She hoped that following the privatisation move, business at the affected market complexes and hawker sites would pick up.

Also present at the press conference were other city councillors Chan Soon Aun, Koay Gaik Kee, Mohd Faruk Abdul Rahman and Chong You Ray.
