State representatives have been urged to be responsible when expressing their issues.
Yang di-Pertua Negri (TYT) of Penang, Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak said matters should be raised constructively on an appropriate platform to maintain stability and harmony.
“I want to remind the parties to be responsible and not spread information or throw baseless accusations and criticisms against the state government.
“There are those who might believe the misinformation and spread the fake news.
“This wave of fake news can destabilise the state’s economy, eroding people’s peace and harmony,” he said in his speech during the first meeting of the first session of the 15th Penang Legislative Assembly in Light Street, George Town.
He said the state’s outstanding achievements would not have been possible without its clear and strong policies, direction and programmes.
“All of this needs to be implemented with the best strategies and without any prejudice or misconception.
“As leaders, it is the responsibility of the members to work together when facing challenges in our country to build a brighter future for the people of Penang,” he said.
Ahmad Fuzi then asked that the Federal Government consider allocating more development funds for Penang, particularly to address traffic congestion issues on its mainland.
“The state needs to address traffic congestion in Sungai Dua, the North-South Expressway and its surrounding areas on the mainland so that it does not negatively impact the socioeconomic development of Penang,” he said.
He then highlighted the fact that Penang would have the highest ageing population in the country by 2040.
“There is a need for the Federal Government to focus on this matter, prioritise infrastructure development in Penang and provide additional funding to meet the healthcare needs of the ageing population in the state.
“I suggest that healthcare and quality of life initiatives such as health screenings for the elderly be improved to promote healthy ageing among the elderly population here,” he said.
Earlier in the morning, a 102-men guard of honour received Ahmad Fuzi followed by the singing of the national and state anthems.
All assemblymen were present.
