Students claim prizes in competition for schools in Shah Alam

A LOCAL authority has joined hands with its corporate partners and the Selangor State Education Department to hold recycling competitions for students.

Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) launched its Recycling Programme 2023 in collaboration with Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd and Tetra Pak Malaysia Sdn Bhd.

Two competitions – the School Recycling Competition and the School Upcycle Site Competition – were held under the programme, which ran from June 1 to Oct 31 for schools in Shah Alam.

The first-place winning team in the Primary and Secondary School category received RM2,000, while winner of the School Upcycle Site Competition secured cash prize of RM3,000.

“Our aim is to inspire community involvement, particularly among students, and foster a culture of recycling and environmental stewardship for the benefit of future generations,” MBSA head of corporate communication Mohd Azhar Mohd Sharif said in a press statement.

Fraser & Neave, the main sponsor, contributed RM22,700 to the programme to highlight the significance of incorporating recycling practices into daily life, emphasising on cultivating these habits from a young age.

The programme also acknowledged exceptional contributions in responsible material disposal in specific categories, with winners in the Highest Aluminium, Highest Plastic and Highest Beverage Carton categories receiving cash prizes.

MBSA also hosted the Clean Toilet Awards in conjunction with World Toilet Day, focusing on public toilets with the aim of encouraging businesses and institutions to uphold high standards of cleanliness.

Winners were rewarded with cash prizes, certificates and recognition for their commitment to providing clean and hygienic public facilities.

“We hope that the competition will inspire efforts to ensure the availability of clean public toilets, especially for tourists in Shah Alam, and set a benchmark for other establishments within the MBSA administrative area,” said Mohd Azhar.

Meanwhile, at the event, Tetra Pak Malaysia acknowledged MBSA’s commitment to environmental sustainability through “The Careton Project.”

It is a collaboration that maximises beverage carton collection for recycling, and incorporates community awareness programmes.

The award ceremony was presided over by MBSA acting mayor Cheremi Tarman.

Also present were Tetra Pak Sustainability director, Southeast Asia, Terrynz Tan, Solid Waste Management and Public Cleaning Department director Mohd Azmi Amer Khan and Fraser & Neave event and sponsorship manager Muhammad Fauzi Ahmad.
