Geopark run celebrates unity


In high spirits, athletes take off at the start of the 10km run.

Ampang Jaya event attracts 1,300 participants

THIS year’s Geopark Ampang Jaya Trail Run (AJTR 2023) not only captured the attention of the local community but also participants from across the globe.

Held in conjunction with the 31st anniversary of the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ), the event, which attracted 1,300 athletes, was organised in collaboration with Tourism Selangor and with support from the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry.

Speaking at the launch of the event, state youth, sports and entrepreneurship committee chairman Mohd Najwan Halimi said Geopark AJTR 2023 was not a mere trail run, but a symbol of international unity and cultural exchange.

The event aims to encourage a healthy lifestyle through outdoor activities. Going beyond a traditional trail experience, the event offered exciting and a challenging terrain as well as giving participants an opportunity to appreciate the environment.

Apart from Malaysians, the run, which took place at Kem Ghafar Baba, Kampung Kemensah, had participants from Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam and Africa.

Runners aged from five to 72, competed in three categories (5km, 10km and 15km). The run also offered categories for Men and Women Open, Men and Women Veteran, and Men and Women Legend.

Winners in each category received RM300 and a plaque, while those who came second and third received RM200 and RM100, and a plaque respectively.

In a statement, MPAJ said the Geopark AJTR 2023 went beyond a trail run, promoting a healthy lifestyle and community spirit.

“It aligns with the recognition of Gombak-Hulu Langat (GHL) Geopark Selangor as a National Geopark, highlighting the region’s geological importance.”

The GHL Geopark Selangor spans 112,955ha, embracing 20 sites of geological significance, including one in the MPAJ area – Permatang Kuarza.

Also present at the event were Tourism Selangor chief executive officer Azrul Shah Mohamad, Tourism Malaysia central region director Azmi Abdullah, MPAJ president Dr Ani Ahmad and MPAJ secretary Julaihah Jamaludin.
