Selangor is providing RM1,000 each to 5,000 women through its “MamaKerja” (Working Mums) incentive to alleviate the burden of childcare costs.
State women and family empowerment, welfare and care economy committee chairman Anfaal Saari said a significant number of mothers were forced to drop their career ambitions as they had to take care of their children at home.
“Many cannot afford to send their children to childcare centres because of the high cost.”
She said that to be eligible for the incentive, the women must be employed and married, and also be Selangor voters or residents (Selangor-born or a resident for over 10 years).
They must have a household income of not more than RM8,000, have an account with the Inland Revenue Board (LHDN) or the Employees’ Provident Fund (KWSP), have at least three children not older than 12, and not receiving assistance from the “Asuh Pintar”, “Tunas” and “Bingkas” schemes.
“Successful applicants will receive the incentive within two weeks of approval,” said Anfaal.
The incentive met its target of 5,000 applicants within six days and as such, applications are now closed, according to Selangor Journal.
Anfaal said the Selangor government continually supported efforts to increase women’s participation in the workforce.
