A PLAN to reduce the number of traffic lights on the Ipoh-Lumut road is in the pipeline with the Works Ministry studying the matter, says Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.
The state infrastructure, energy, water and public transport committee chairman said Ipoh was not far from Lumut but traffic lights lengthened travel time.
“There are 32 traffic lights and we plan to reduce the number to 15,” he said during the question-and-answer session at the Perak State Assembly.
He was responding to Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin (PN -Sungai Manik) who asked about the state’s plan to reduce traffic jam at the Ipoh-Lumut road.
Earlier, Steven Tiw (PH-Tronoh) asked about upgrading work at the road’s dark stretches and accident-prone spots.
“Upgrading of eight street lights at a cost of RM1.8mil has been completed,” said Mohammad Nizar.
In August last year, StarMetro reported that residents were worried about the frequency of accidents along the Ipoh-Lumut road due to poor street lighting and faulty traffic lights.
