ONLY two reports were received about tin mining activities in Perak, says Teh Kok Lim.
The state science, environment and green technology committee chairman said the state Mineral and Geoscience Department (JMG) only received two complaints from January to November.
“One was from Sungai Rui in Hulu Perak district and another from Tanjung Tualang in Kinta district.”
He said Perak has 13 approved tin mines with three each in Hulu Perak and Kinta districts, two each in Kampar and Perak Tengah districts while Muallim, Larut Matang Selama and Kuala Kangsar districts each have one tin mine.
Teh was answering an additional question by Ong Seng Guan (PH-Pokok Assam), who asked about the number of tin mines in the state and the industry’s negative impact.
Earlier, Mohamad Amin Roslan (PN-Pengkalan Hulu) asked about the standard operating procedures used by the state government to curb the impact of tin mining activities on the ecosystem, especially rivers.
Teh said JMG conducted scheduled patrolling and monitoring at all 13 mines.
“The monitoring includes conducting water samples and analyses.
“For example, when the department received the report at Hulu Perak, officers went to the site and took an effluent sample from the river.
“They conducted various analyses including checking the dissolved oxygen and heavy metal content.”
He said JMG was also implementing sustainable projects to monitor mining activities.
“The state is always concerned about the impact of tin ore mining.
“We will ensure that mining activities will have the least impact and not cause environmental disasters.”
