Construction of heroes monument in Sibu on track

Work on the monument is going according to schedule.

A 10-storey high Sibu Heroes monument that will be a new attraction to the town is 50% complete.

The project costing RM700,000 is located at the town square.

“The monument will be another landmark for Sibu.

“The design was made by Universiti Teknologi Sarawak (UTS) while the council acts as the implementing agency,” said Sibu Municipal Council deputy chairman Mohammed Abdullah Izkandar Rosely.

Izkandar said the project was the initiative of Deputy Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee who used funds from the Rural Transformation Project of Nangka state constituency for the purpose.

The 30m Sibu Heroes’ monument is built to commemorate the contributions of Sarawak’s freedom fighters Rosli Dhoby and his three friends.

According to the original plan, the monument was to take six months to complete.

On Dec 4, 1949, the second British Colony governor in Sarawak Sir Duncan George Stewart was killed by members of Rukun 13 comprising Rosli, Awang Ramli Amit Awang Matsaruddin, Morshidi Sidek and Bujang Suntong in Sibu.

The incident took place not far from the project site.

The monument’s design will commemorate the freedom fighters who had a deep impact on the families involved in this bloody tragedy.

It will also display Rosli’s last handwriting for all to see.
