The home also feted seven other remarkable women aged 90 to 94.
The mood at St Mark’s Cozy Home (SMCH), an elder care centre in Sungai Buloh, Selangor, was transformed into a festive atmosphere as friends and well-wishers gathered to celebrate Hannah Sarojini Viswasam’s 100th birthday.
Hannah, born on Nov 14, 1923, in Klang, Selangor, has led a remarkable life of service and commitment.
As the fourth surviving sibling out of five children, her early education was at a Convent school, followed by secondary schooling at Methodist Girls School in Klang.
Her passion for caring for others led her to pursue a career in nursing to become a qualified nurse in the 1940s.
Her career as head matron took her on a journey to various children’s homes across the country.
Known for her unwavering dedication, she ensured that the children under her care received the best quality of care, emphasising proper nutrition and cleanliness.
As a single mother, Hannah made the most of her time outside of work, devoting herself to raising her son.
Former head matron Hannah was born in 1923 and continues to inspire others.
As Hannah celebrated a grand milestone birthday surrounded by her loved ones, her guests felt blessed to witness her remarkable journey and the impact she has made on the lives of those around her.
Her legacy of dedication and devotion will continue to inspire generations to come.
Family members, the home’s chaplains, Rev Raymond Lai and Rev James Lau, SMCH chairman Lee Kim Hua, SMCH board members and staff as well as well-wishers gathered to pay tribute to the centenarian and other residents who have touched the lives of many.
In addition to Hannah’s milestone, the home also celebrated the lives of seven other remarkable women who reached the ages of 90 to 94.
These women have been pillars of wisdom and grace, providing guidance and support to the home’s residents and staff.
They are Lee Kim Yin (94), Ling Soh King (94), Lee Loi Keng (90), Teoh Siew Lee ( 91), Foong Kiew (92) and Lai Chew Moi (94).
Each family member of the women being celebrated read about their mother or grandmother’s life story where some as young as nine worked in mining, rubber plantation and had desired to be successful in life.
The evening was filled with good fellowship and laughter as the guests reminisced about cherished memories and shared stories of the past.
Two cakes were prepared to honour them, one for Hannah and another for the other women.
