TO uncover and nurture budding ice-skating talents, Sunway Pyramid Ice welcomed over 200 children to celebrate World Ice Skating Day.
This initiative was also a response to the call from Youth and Sports Ministry for malls to further promote youth and sports-related activities.
The youths skated for free during two sessions along with 120 students and coaches who performed on the ice.
In the spirit of Christmas, 35 children from Home For the Children by Rumah Charis and Angels Children’s Home joined the fun activities which included lunch, a visit from Santa Claus and a gift session.
Additionally, in support of the Rakan Muda initiative by Youth and Sports Ministry, 100 lucky children received complimentary skating lessons from the Sunway Pyramid Ice Skating Academy.
This is the first time a Malaysian ice-skating rink is commemorating World Ice Skating Day.
Sunway Pyramid Ice assistant general manager Albert Cheok said approximately 50 countries participated in the global initiative this year, each organising a variety of events.
“Although World Ice Skating Day is only in its second edition this year, it is a milestone for ice skaters to have a day of recognition and to rekindle their spirit of play and sport,” he said in a statement.
Cheok said the main event took place at Lake Placid in New York, the US.
“We are happy to be among 50 countries playing a part in showcasing the ice skating sport,” he added.
World Ice Skating Day stemmed from the idea to popularise and share the spirit of ice skating through a celebration with a vision towards development, inclusion and fairness.
Skate Malaysia Competition director and Ice Skating Institute Asia president Harry Janto Leo said, “World Ice Skating Day, a global celebration presented by the International Skating Union (ISU), is a great chance to help our youth enrich quality time spent with sports.
“We made the rink free for a day to inspire young children and teenagers who could be aspiring athletes.
“It is also a wonderful opportunity to practise our commitment in fostering the unique sport of ice-skating in Malaysia.”
Founded in 1892, ISU is the oldest governing international winter sports federation, recognised by the International Olympic Committee.
