A NEW orchid hybrid has been named after the Prime Minister’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail during the launch of Orkid Putrajaya 2023.

Introducing Dendrobium Dr. Wan Azizah, the flower has five curled sepals and brown reddish lebellum with a white centre.

It is a hybrid between Dendrobium Penang Little Magic and Dendrobium Seah Koko.

Organised by Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj), the Orkid Putrajaya 2023 event with the theme “Pesona Anggerik” will be held from Dec 14 to Dec 20.

PPj president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud said in a statement that the seven-day event targets 100,000 visitors.

“The biennial orchid exhibition showcases about 20 VIP orchids in the indoor orchid gallery such as Papilionanda Sultan Idris Shah, Holttumara Tuanku Zara, Rananthera Kalsom and Phaleonopsis Do Bru Queen Saleha.

“There will be vendors selling different types of orchids as well as cactus and a wide variety of ornamental flowers,” he said.

The event was officiated by Dr Wan Azizah, who is also the Bandar Tun Razak MP.

Also present was Federal Territories Department director Datuk Indera Noridah Abdul Rahim.

Visitors can also expect an international orchids showcase from nine countries as well as other rare orchid species on display.

There will also be unique bonsai tree and terrarium exhibitions as well as workshops held over the week.
