Exhibition in Putrajaya showcases beautiful local and international varieties
A HYBRID orchid named after Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, wife of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, was unveiled at the launch of the Orkid Putrajaya 2023 exhibition by Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPj).
Called Dendrobium Dr Wan Azizah, the flower has five curled sepals and a brown reddish labellum with a white centre.
It is a hybrid of Dendrobium Penang Little Magic and Dendrobium Seah Koko.
This new hybrid has been registered with the Royal Horticultural Society, London.
Other varieties are also on display at the exhibition themed “Pesona Anggerik”.
Organised by PPj, the exhibition was launched by Dr Wan Azizah.
It is on until tomorrow at Taman Botani, Precinct 1, Putrajaya.
Visitor Siti Nubayu Mohd Subari, 36, brought her mother and son to check out the blooms at Orkid Putrajaya 2023.
She said the vibrant orchid varieties had always struck her with awe and they never fail to put a smile on her face.
“There is a lot of variety here and we enjoyed the exhibition,” said the orchid lover.
Siti Nubayu’s mother Mas Edah Yaiman, 67, loves orchids with smaller petals.
“Larger petals need more care than smaller ones.
“I have a few potted orchids at home,” said Mas Edah.
She was seen introducing the orchid species at the exhibition to her six-year-old grandson Luqman Harriz Khairil Amri.
PPj president Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud said Orkid Putrajaya 2023 aimed to promote Putrajaya as a tourist spot for international and domestic travellers.
“The biennial orchid exhibition showcases about 20 VIP orchids in the indoor orchid gallery, such as Papilionanda Sultan Idris Shah, Holttumara Tuanku Zara, Rananthera Kalsom and Phalaenopsis Do Bru Queen Saleha.
“Visitors can also expect international varieties from Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Taiwan, the Philippines and Japan,” he said.
Also present was Federal Territories Department director Datuk Indera Noridah Abdul Rahim.
“Orkid Putrajaya” has several sections including an indoor air-conditioned gallery.
There are outdoor orchid vendors as well as food and beverage stalls, workshops and orchid-themed fashion shows.
The exhibition includes bonsai, grown in preparation for the World Bonsai Conference 2026, and terrarium exhibits created by secondary school students.
