THE 100-year-old Hospital Bukit Mertajam now has air-conditioning units worth over RM200,000 installed in six areas.

Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, who is also Bukit Mertajam MP, contributed his constituency funds for the units.

“Staff at the hospital have been working under uncomfortable conditions for 20 years.

“These upgrades were critical,” said Sim at a press conference after visiting the hospital.

He was given a rousing welcome by the hospital director and staff, with songs and cheers filling the air.

Over RM200,000 was used for air-conditioning and wiring works at six wards and departments.

Another RM32,000 went to chairs and other furniture for the hospital’s emergency ward.

“The work was completed last month and will benefit 1,000 patients and workers who use the facility daily,” said Sim.

He said discussions would be held, especially with Health Ministry, for further upgrades.

“A RM5mil CT scan machine for the hospital is in the pipeline,” added Sim.
