Meru’s streetlight woes from aged cables, lightning

DAMAGE from lightning may be one of the reasons for faulty streetlights in Meru, Klang.

Klang Municipal Council (MPK) Engineering Department director Zamri Othman said a high voltage surge could have affected the electrical components.

“Even though we did not find any sign of fire, soot or charred areas, it could be lightning that caused damage to light bulbs and the time switch equipment,” he said after inspecting several lamps at the council’s Electric Unit Office at Jalan Tepi Sungai in Klang.

Zamri said aged cables with insulation deterioration had been identified as causing streetlights to be prone to short circuits.

“We received 288 complaints about faulty streetlights in Meru and repaired 242 with another 46 repairs ongoing.

“For some areas, we need time to find the fault and we do not know how long it will take to fix.”

Meru assemblyman Mariam Abdul Rashid has also called for the council to resolve the matter.
