Aiming to raise half a million ringgit for school via golf tourney

Overall construction of the Foon Yew High School Seri Alam campus in Johor cost RM83mil.

FOON Yew High School will be celebrating its 111th anniversary next year by holding a charity golf tournament in Johor.

Its board chairman Tay Chin Hien said the tournament was also to raise RM500,000 for the Foon Yew High School Seri Alam campus building and development fund.

The campus, which began operating in 2021, has an overall construction cost of RM83mil.

Faced with the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the school met various obstacles in its fundraising efforts.

“As of Nov 6, there is still a shortage of RM3.37mil to cover the building and development costs and we are hoping for public support,” he told StarMetro.

Tay added that the board of directors dug into its reserves to cover the construction cost and the fund had to be replenished in order to cover the salaries and benefits for 370 staff members at all three campuses in Stulang, Kulai and Seri Alam.

“In addition to staff salaries, we have to also cover scholarships and bursaries for less privileged students so the board must use the fund carefully,” he said.

Golf tournament organising chairman Vincent Ho encouraged school alumni and the public to participate for a good cause.

“Through their support, we have raised about RM210,000 so far,” said Ho.

They expect 100 participants for the golf tournament on Jan 11, 2024, at the Forest City Golf Club, Johor.

“We hope to meet our target soon,” he added.

Participants also stand a chance to drive home a brand new car when they sign up for the golf tournament.
