Sweet mission to keep traditional desserts alive

THERE’s nothing quite as comforting as the Chinese sweet soup called tong sui, which is made from ingredients like red beans, sweet potatoes and black sesame.

For the past four years, Billy Wong Chee Cheng and his family have been operating WZ Dessert, a tong sui or traditional Chinese dessert stall.

Located directly in front of TTE Foodland eatery, the stall’s strategic site allows diners to end their meals with something sweet.

Wong, a former insurance salesman, is also on a mission to revive the popularity of time-honoured desserts.

“I started this business primarily because I wanted to preserve the authentic taste of traditional desserts,” he said.

WZ Dessert offers nine types of tong sui, including Bubur Cha Cha and red bean soup.

The Bubur Cha Cha (RM4.50) is a personal favourite.

The vibrant mix of cubed tubers and colourful jelly bobbing in the luscious, coconut cream, tinted pink by the purple sweet potato was visually appealing.

The tubers were tender and had absorbed the rich milky flavour.

The stall’s signature red bean soup (RM3) contained softened medium-sized beans and bits of red dates in a broth that was not too sweet.

It had an earthy, nutty and mildly sweet taste.

Wong and his family make these sweet treats daily from recipes gathered from their elders.

“I sought recipes from my grandmother and mother, and made slight adjustments to the sweetness.”

He acknowledged that making these desserts was a painstaking process.

“It takes more than eight hours to prepare all the ingredients.

“Every business day I visit the morning market for fresh coconut milk, so my customers get to savour the freshest taste in every serving,” said Wong.

He said the rest of the day would be spent preparing all the desserts before the stall opened in the evening.

Popular among customers are Beancurd Barley Gingko (RM4), Black Sesame Soup (RM4.50), Peanut Soup (RM4.50) and Peach Gum Snow Fungus Longan (RM5).

WZ Dessert operates from 5pm to 11pm daily, except on Mondays and Thursdays.

The stall is located at No.3, Jalan 1b, Taman Jati, Rawang, Selangor.
