A cultural cultivation programme will take place on Feb 18 during the Penang Chinese New Year or Miaohui celebration.
Organised by Penang Chinese Clan Council in collaboration with Penang Cultural Inheritors Society, it hopes to nurture the younger generation’s interest in traditional culture.
“The programme invites participants to observe and document various cultural activities and performances that showcase the diversity and vibrancy of Penang’s heritage,” said event master planner Chong Jian Mei.
The programme, first carried out in 2008, is open to schoolchildren aged seven and above as well as the public.
“Participants are encouraged to document the sights, sounds, foods, games and experiences of traditional culture on the day of Miaohui in their logbook,” said Chong.
She said they could draw, write, take photographs or do scrapbooking.
“All participants must submit their logbooks to the secretariat or send them to the designated submission counter before March 22,” she said.
Those wishing to participate can get a logbook from the organising committee or at the information counter of 1st Avenue Mall before the event or from the secretariat on event day.
Pengkalan Kota assemblyman Wong Yuee Harng, who launched the programme, was full of praise for the organisers.
“The programme aims to inspire more children to visit historical sites, participate in the festival and immerse themselves in cultural education and preservation,” said Wong.
“Through this programme, the custodians and volunteers are nurturing the next generation of cultural stewards who will safeguard this priceless legacy.”
